"Do not mistake stability for stillness. Stability is the sum of all of ones efforts into the ability to make an impact"
It's abundantly clear that 2020 hasn't gone the way that we thought it would. If you're like me, 2020 was going to be the best year yet. We were going to set big goals and have a great time with our new customers and clients riding the economic wave we were in.
2020 has turned out to be a HUGE wake up call. I've already been teaching an improved way to strategize - involving ditching the traditional concept of a strategic plan and moving into a different approach.
Some lessons we’ve learned already -
The question is, how do you become more stable while things become more unstable, more volatile, and less predictable. COVID-19, while it has arrived at an unpredictable day/month/year, was 100% predictable. How many movies have we seen, how many close calls (like Ebola, SARS, etc). I presented strategy once to a group of entrepreneurs and suggested that they include a risk evaluation, even if it was a minimal practice, and one person asked, “won’t that make me worry all the time”? I ask, how does the wake up call feel. Having a plan and some security in place is worth it! But that’s just one factor out of many.
A lot of attention is being paid to “resiliency” and resiliency is important. We all need to stay strong, motivated, and positive. A key to being resilient is stability in the first place. The scientific definition of stability from the National Science Teaching Center is: “Stability means that a small disturbance will fade away—that is, the system will stay in, or return to, the stable condition. ... Stable matter is a system of atoms in dynamic equilibrium.” Ergo, let’s talk about creating a business that is more than the sum of its part, that is synergistic in it’s operations that created the type of dynamism needed in today’s business world.
